Passive chilled beam
System Concept
Passive chilled beams are normally suspended above the ceiling and provide cooling or heating by natural convection. They are sized to handle the majority of the sensible cooling or heating loads. A separate primary air system is used to provide ventilation and humidity control.
JNS chilled beam systems are available in standard configurations for mounting on top of metal ceiling panels and are configured in widths of nominal 300mm and 600mm with lengths to match the ceiling grid.
The units are most suitable for use in interior zones in combination with chilled ceilings locating them where a higher cooling capacity is required than can be provided by the chilled ceiling.
They are also suitable for use as a perimeter zone system when the perimeter solar and transmission loads are low.
System Benefits
The benefits of the passive chilled beam system are similar to that of the active chilled beam except for its lower capacity and the need to be careful with the positioning of the units. Due to their reliance on natural convection it is normal to get a down draft immediately below the units and therefore they should be located where this will not affect the building users.
